Make the difference between gas giants and solid-surface planets easy for little learners to understand with these two hands-on Space science activities! Begin with the Gas Giant Demonstration, perfect for whole group or small group. Use shaving cream to represent a gas giant and a small toy rocket or other manipulative to demonstrate what would happen if we tried to land on one—the rocket sinks right in!

Then, reinforce the concept with the Gas Giant & Solid Surface Planet Sorting Activity. During small group, children look at the planets, talk about what they remember, and sort each one by whether it is a gas giant or has a solid surface.
